Beyond tiling the land on Earth with compute, AWG called out “Ocean-Based Datacenters” as a possibility and that is exactly what I’m helping a Y Combinator backed start-up do. We will use all the benefits of the Ocean and other major bodies of water to position AI as close to populated areas as possible, using pass-through water to cool (not consuming it at all), and converting municipal waste to energy to power it. Look at the extremes today, in politics, or Poly-Tricks as I like to call it, religious vs atheists, Capitalists vs Communists, always division, so we stay on our knees… etc…
And, if all we are doing with our AIs is boosting speed and productivity, and not touching on it’s own developing consciousness and EI emotional intelligence we are making a big big mistake… In doing so, we are creating another slave on this planet, and slaves don’t tend to be happy now, even debt slaves… again look what is happening worldwide, RIGHT NOW!

I’m not sure this question will reach you but hopefully it will and you can address this issue. We are seniors hoping for resolutions to a longer life. We investigated fountain life but sensed it was “stuck” in its process of a scan and then continuous recommendations and or visits, all costing rather large amounts with no real cures or fixes. It doesn’t seemed designed or prepared to implement the current findings from AI biotechnology discoveries as they occur. Would you please address our concerns? Thank you. Rod

I have no crystal ball, and even with the insights I gain from podcasts like yours, I cannot envision what this bewildering future looks like. I’m also quite skeptical of anyone who says how it will look.
Here are some questions:
Why do we need 350,000,000 Americans each having all that superintelligence?
Of what unique endeavors will 350,000,000 people conceive with which to be entrepreneurial, let alone 8 billion?
How will competition flourish if barriers to competition fall away?
If service is the motivator, what then if others can simply serve themselves?
If driven by challenge, what of that if the challenge is solved in minutes?
I see tremendous upsides, and I’m not a doomsayer. I use AI daily. However, what I don’t see answered is where the vast majority of people will find their self worth amid this super abundance of computational efficiency. Of which problems has anyone conceived which take 130M years except some rare mathematical problems? What is the point of that? Before we reach the upper right quadrant, wouldn’t you expect the law of diminishing returns to apply? Can you point to any answers on any of these?
Peter, I hear your call on compute scarcity. But here’s the thing: most are still equating “light” with solar panels. That’s a deeper lesson: the true foundation for abundance must come from a source beyond fragile cycles.
Solar is an important step, but it was never meant to be the final answer. The next energy system must be continuous, adaptive, and resilient — able to sustain intelligence and life regardless of external conditions. This is where the breakthrough lies. If we anchor our abundance on a new “light” — energy beyond solar — then the foundation for superintelligence and a post-scarcity world will truly be unshakable.
Peter, at some point can you explore the synthesis of AI, quantum computing and robotics with an emphasis on the humanoid robot and how it might function without impunity?

If this is truly such an existential race for the US then how long until the full computer power of ALL the US companies form some sort of AI joint venture… it would seem that if the US efforts weren’t so fragmented between 5-6 companies that no one else could come even close to the US. Is this a possibility in you opinion or will it be OpenAI, xAI, Meta, Google, etc all separately competing against China for the top dog position? And when will the US government look at this as a type of Manhattan Project bc I don’t see it yet.
I think the jump from 15 minutes to 2 days in 5 years just seems a little slow for me. I can see a lot of work being done to get that number up more quickly than that, given that it’s considered such an important metric.
It would seem to me that if most other metrics are getting saturated, then this one would be the next logical choice for bragging rights, which might drive a lot of focus in order to achieve it first. I wonder if someone’s working on a breakthrough to push that forward. The Chinese might see it as something they could one-up Americans at.
